THE FUNERAL OF THE
REV. JOHN TAIT
1860

[Geelong Advertiser]

The funeral of the Rev. John Tait took place yesterday, and Geelong afforded abundant evidence of the respect with which his memory is regarded, and of the sympathy felt by all for his bereaved family.

The ministers of the Presbyterian Church and the office bearers of the Little Malop Street congregation, assembled at the schoolhouse, Gheringhap Street, and then proceeded to the manse in Skene Street. The ministers of the other denominations, in accordance with a spontaneous and unsolicited arrangement of their own, assembled at the Mechanics' Institute, and then proceeded to the manse.

The hearse, followed by this procession, then repaired to the church in Little Malop Street, where the congregation and others were in waiting. After divine service, conducted by Dr. Adam Cairns, the funeral procession repaired to the cemetery in the following order: -

1. The Hearse.

2. The family of the deceased.

3. The Office Bearers of his Congregation.

4. The Ministers of the Presbyterian Church.

5. Ministers of other Denominations.

6. The congregation and others.

Before the remains were committed to the grave, Mr Campbell engaged in prayer. All the clergy of Geelong were present, and it is calculated that the attendance was not less than 500.

As the procession moved along the street most of the places of business were observed to be closed, and crowds of interested and sympathising spectators were present as lookers on.

After the funeral, the brethren of the Presbytery of Geelong met in the Church, Little Malop Street, when Mr. Balfour stated that the office-bearers and congregation were desirous that Dr. Cairns should supply the pulpit on the forenoon, and Rev. Andrew Love in the evening of Sabbath first, and that Mr. Macdonald should supply in the forenoon, and Mr. Campbell in the evening of Sabbath week. Tbe Presbytery having ascertained that these brethren were willing to undertake the duties, approved of those arrangements, and they further agreed that the church should be declared to be vacant at both services on Sabbath first.
